A Visit to the Pediatrician

Liam pediatric visit was today. I cringe everytime I have to take him to the doctor because of the questions that are sure to follow.

As you know, Liam is a tough boy and fearless to boot. If it is dangerous, you are sure to find him there waiting to test his fate. And it never ends well.

The pediatrician, who is an excellent doctor, starts examining Liam. While doing the examination, he notices some old bruises on Liam's stomach. Naturally, he asks me how Liam got those bruises. I told him the truth, those bruises were made when Liam fell of his bike. Because of the position that the bike fell and the way that Liam landed on the concrete sidewalk atop the bike, he bruised his stomach with the wheel. He asked me incredulously,

-"He did this with his bike?"

-"Yes, he got those bruises from his bike."

Obviously, I know the doctor is just concerned about the welfare of the child, especially in view of all the abused children that we see on the news or newspaper. But still, it irks me.

Every year I go through the same thing. I keep telling them that this boy is rough. For example: He takes off running and doesn't stop until he bounces off of the wall. If he climbs a tree, instead of climbing back down, he drops like a sack of potatoes. He likes to ride his bike; it if is riding smoothly, he will lift his feet and place them on the top tube. This is an accident waiting to happen.

Liam rates in the 65% percentile in height (down from 85% last year) and 85% percentile in weight. While Liam is not overweight, the doctor wants me to monitor his diet closely. He is only allowed 4-6 ounces of juice in a day. I should monitor his sugar intake to see if he will settle down a bit. I told the doctor that Liam is very bright, but lacks focus and is easily distracted and disruptive. He suggested that I take some adhd scales home and have his teacher fill them out as well for an evaluation. Obviously, this will be when the new school year begins in September. I am hoping that with the chance in diet, he will come down a bit. I really don't want to be giving him medication at such a young age, especially when we don't know what its long term effect will be on him.

In the meantime, I have to take him to the ophthalmologist for a vision exam and to an Ear, Nose, Throat specialist for his never ending allergy.
