At 6, he is super bright, but can't seem to follow directions. At times, he does strange and dangerous things for no apparent reason. Yesterday, I got a note from his teacher telling me that Liam was sticking the pencil in his ear and leaving it there to hold in place. When I asked him why he did that, his answer was, "I was bored." I know that I am an adult, but never in a million years would I stick a pencil in my ear no matter how bored I was.
Today, I got a call from his music teacher. Liam just won't listen and is all over the place. Can't sit still and wants to walk around. Music class is one of his favorite subjects and Mrs. Surrency is an affable teacher that Liam loves to pieces.
He does not want to follow directions, has a bad temper, is very stubborn, thinks he is right all of the time and knows better than anyone else and has no concerns for anyone other than himself.
Often, I have thought that he must have ADD, but he can focus on things when he wants. If he doesn't want to, then forget it. He can sit still when playing his video game or when watching a favorite cartoon or show. I know that he wants to do well. I know he wants his classmates to like him. I know he wants to behave at home and not be so impulsive. I am thinking that maybe he must have some type of neurological disorder such as Asperger's.
I have scheduled an appointment with the pediatrician to try to get him help. I am really leery of medicating children but if there is something that can help him calm down enough to concentrate on his work and social skills, then so be it. My heart is so heavy right now and crying doesn't help. I just want what's best for him.
I got to go get some forms from his pediatrician to fill out in time for his evaluation next month. Thank you for listening. 2840
