Great Adventure at Night

Last Friday, DH and I took the kids to Great Adventure at night time. The park is supposed to be less crowded after 4 p.m., but that is not always true. The place was bursting at the seams so the attractions were jam-packed  with incredibly long wait times.  DH is not the most patient man (thus the reason I never ever take him with me to the park in the first place) so we decided to walk around the park.

The only thing we did was to board the Skyride, where, of course, I was able to take some aerial shots of the park.  We stayed until the Glow in the Dark Parade was finished - 9:20 p.m.  I was fooling around with my camera settings to see if I could take better photos, but as you can see, I need to keep practicing a lot. These are the best of the bunch. Enjoy!

One Last Hurrah

Photo I took while up in the Sky Way ride.

Synchronized licking of oversized lollipops.

I'm very surprised that I was able to clean up this photo so well. I took it through a plexiglass that was filthy. You can still see some haze around his lower stomach area.

Magic show...joining of the rings

Wags the dog - Wiggles World - Halloween show

Vulture

Baby Zebra

Ostrich...it got pretty close to us, but didn't peck us, for a change. :)

Bear...walked right in front of our car! They seem quite docile, but it is always scary to see them approach the car. You never know what they can do.

Red Kangaroo - I was surprised to see them out and about. Usually they are resting in a dark, shaded spot under the trees where I can't take decent shots.

One-eared red Kangaroo just basking in the sun.
Llama

No. American Bison

White Rhinoceros

Yes, I did it again. I took the kids on another trip to the wild Safari and Great Adventure. Today was the last day of the season. As usual, we went to the safari first, then the theme park. I was able to get decent close ups of the zebras, rhinos and llamas.

We headed straight to Wiggles World for our funnel cake fix. Liam attacked it like it was the last morsel on earth, while Kaylie happily dusted herself with the powder sugar. Then we caught the Wiggles Halloween Show, followed by "Professor Slither's Creepy Crawlers Show," which featured a Chilean spider, chameleon, Flemish Rabbit, and Coral Corn Snake. We have seen the show 4 times already so there aren't any surprises.
Since it was out last trip, I made it a point of boarding the Sky Way line, which took us from one side of the park to the other. I am afraid of heights so being up high in the sky wasn't all that thrilling for me, but Kaylie and Liam loved it. It was super freezing cold, too. The kids were giggling, while that god awful feeling of fear washed over me. Just thinking about it now, brings it all back...the tingling at the bottom of my feet. That didn't deter me from taking a couple of pictures, though they are not the best. I got to face my fears, right?
We saw a Bengal tiger presentation and bought the biggest, most colorful lollipops ever. The kids went in the swings, rode the train and treehouse. We also went on the enchanted teacups and the carousel before ending the day.
So long 6 Flags Great Adventure. It was a great summer experience for the kids. I have thousands of photos to print and/or scrap. :)

On this particular day, the zebras were all out. Some of them had babies, which were brownish in color. We saw one feeding, which invariably brought up the topic of mammals/mammary glands and the old question, "When we were babies, did we drink milk from your breast, too?"

These Ostriches are a trip. The minute that they see an inspection sticker on the windshield, they start pecking away at it. My only consolation is that while this one was attacking my car, the car in front of me had 3 of them. :)

The llama (Lama glama) is a South American camelid, widely used as a pack animal by the Incas and other natives of the Andes mountains. In South America llamas are still used as beasts of burden, as well as for the production of fiber and meat.
The height of a full-grown, full-size llama is between 5.5 feet (1.6 meters) to 6 feet (1.8 m) tall at the top of the head. They can weigh between approximately 280 pounds (127 kilograms) and 450 pounds (204 kilograms). At birth, a baby llama (called a cria) can weigh between 20 pounds (9 kilograms) to 30 pounds (14 kilograms). Llamas are very social animals and like to live with other llamas as a herd. Overall, the fiber produced by a llama is very soft and is naturally lanolin free. Llamas are intelligent and can learn simple tasks after a few repetitions. When using a pack, llamas can carry about 25%–30% of their body weight for several miles.

The White Rhinoceros or Square-lipped rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is one of the five species of rhinoceros that still exist and is one of the few megafauna species left. Behind only the Elephant, it is probably the most massive remaining land animal in the world. It is well known for its wide mouth used for grazing and for being the most social of all rhino species. The White Rhino is the most common of all rhinos and consists of two subspecies, with the northern subspecies being rarer than the southern. The northern subspecies may have as few as 13 remaining world-wide - 9 captive and 4 wild - although the wild population has not been seen since 2006 and may have disappeared entirely

The Moluccan Cockatoo, Cacatua moluccensis also known as Salmon-crested Cockatoo is a cockatoo endemic to south Moluccas in eastern Indonesia. At 50 cm, it is the largest of the white cockatoos. The female is larger than the males on average. It has white-pink feathers with a definite peachy glow, a slight yellow on the underwing and underside of the tail feathers and a large retractable recumbent crest which it raises when threatened, revealing hitherto concealed bright red-orange plumes to frighten potential attackers (may also be raised in excitement, or other 'emotional' displays). It also has one of the louder calls in the parrot world and in captivity is a capable mimic. They live 50 to 80 years and some have been known to live up to 100 years. 1876

White Tailed Gnu

I am so jazzed up about this album that I am already on my 7th page on my travel album to the safari this summer. I chose Rough to the Touch because it has the most wonderful textures and old world feel that I was looking for. I want my pages to look different from each other yet have a cohesive look. To that end, I use the litho/sketch look, naturalistic element, alpha and vintage frames to tie it all together. The truth is that though I am the one designing the pages, they are so different than what I usually do that sometimes I feel like I am looking at someone's page. How cool is that? If I say so myself. :)

The White Tailed Gnu can no longer be found in the wild. Once down to only 100, they now number over 4,000 throughout protected reserves. They have a deep brown coat, stiff mane and a long light colored tail that touches the ground.
*Smallest of the gnu family at 3½ feet tall
*Both males and females carry horns
*Live in large herds near water

North American Bison

This is my 5th page of an album I am making documenting all of our trips to the wild safari at Six Flags Great Adventure this summer.

The American Bison has a keen sense of smell, eyes that can detect movement up to a mile away and the ability to run as fast as a horse. A fully mature male can weigh 2100 lbs or more - a newborn calf weighs only 30 lbs. In the spring, the bison begin to shed their coats and rub their bodies against any object they can find.
=Largest animal in America=Commonly known as Buffalo
=Can smell water and enemies as far as three miles away
=Social animals that live in groups of up to 200

White Rhinoceros / Rough to the Touch / Lorie Davison

White Rhinos are actually gray. Their name comes from the Dutch word "weit," which refers to their upper lip, not their color.

Grouchy/Evil Ostrich/Bribery/Safari/GreatAdventure

[Bribery] I have discovered that Liam loves to be tickled and kissed, so to entice him into having his picture taken with Marvin, I promised him lots of hugs and kisses. It worked like a charm. He quickly claimed his prize; Kaylie was so jealous! :) Don't worry, I gave her lots of hugs and kisses, too.

Isn't this the loveliest flower ever? I need to find its name.

Emu
Elk
Buffalo

[Evil Ostrich] I was minding my own business, just watching the African Elephants when this fellow came over to our car and started pecking our windshield wiper. He pecked at it for 5 minutes. The kids were so scared. I blew my horn 2 times and it eventually moved away. I was so afraid of running him over, if I started to move. So we just waited it out.

Giraffe (reminds me of Jeffrey from Toys R Us)
Ostrich (not the one that attacked our car)

Liam at the Oasis.

This little lad must have been about 2 years old. He was totally fascinated with the dancing water.

Kaylie at the Oasis.

I wonder why when I ask Liam to smile, he frowns instead. It happens instantaneously. And my gosh, is he the grouchiest kid ever or what?! He does look cute, though.

But I really can't say much about it because he is after all my son, and he takes after me. (Don't tell anyone I told you but I used to be a really grouchy teen and absolutely detested being woken up to go to school.)

I try my best to coax him into a better mood by tickling him, or just coddling with him. However, his sister is a different matter altogether. She is the yin to his yang. She just wants to hug him and kiss him, but he pushes her away. And he can be so mean. Sometimes it is hard to try to reign in his character.
But enough about grouchy Liam, let me show you the photos from yesterday's trip to the Safari @ Great Adventure. The kids had lots of fun. We go back next week to Hurricane Harbor (water rides.) 652
