White Tailed Gnu

I am so jazzed up about this album that I am already on my 7th page on my travel album to the safari this summer. I chose Rough to the Touch because it has the most wonderful textures and old world feel that I was looking for. I want my pages to look different from each other yet have a cohesive look. To that end, I use the litho/sketch look, naturalistic element, alpha and vintage frames to tie it all together. The truth is that though I am the one designing the pages, they are so different than what I usually do that sometimes I feel like I am looking at someone's page. How cool is that? If I say so myself. :)

The White Tailed Gnu can no longer be found in the wild. Once down to only 100, they now number over 4,000 throughout protected reserves. They have a deep brown coat, stiff mane and a long light colored tail that touches the ground.
*Smallest of the gnu family at 3½ feet tall
*Both males and females carry horns
*Live in large herds near water

Oh Lord, I woke up at 7:00 a.m. this morning with a huge headache. It is 2 hours later and it is still going strong. I just took 3 tylenols to make it go away. If I take 2, it won't do the job good or fast enough.

I Know He Loves Me, but...

I took this photo of Liam this morning. I love that shirt of his. He insists on combing his own hair. :) He even accessorised...he really likes his silver cross with the black wrap around string that he got from a gumball machine. Yeah baby, he is stylin' to the max.;-) LOL

And this is Kaylie...don't you just love that pinkish healthy glow on her face. I'd kill to have those pink luscious lips and pinkish glow.

Kaylie loves to dress up to got to school. She looked especially cute this morning.
She told me yesterday that the kids in her class always ask her why she is so dressed up.
I asked her if she wants to dress down, to which she said, "NO."

I know he loves me, but every morning that I take Liam to school he does it.

I drop him off in front of the school, and just as I am about to hug and kiss him, he looks around to see if anyone is looking before he quickly hugs me and gives me a peck on the cheek. Kay on the other hand, doesn't care who sees us. :) 1629

Llamas / Rough to the Touch / Lorie Davison

This is my 6th page of an album I am making documenting all of our trips to the wild safari at Six Flags Great Adventure this summer.

Llamas can be found commercially throughout mountainous areas of North America, Europe and Australia. They are pack animals that are maintained in herds by natives of South America. The long woolen coat of llamas is commonly used to make clothing and blankets. Their diet consists of native shrubs and grasses of mountain vegetation. Llamas live in dry climates and get most of their moisture from their food.

Life span approximately 28 yearsWeight up to 450 poundsLlamas have three stomachs and are ruminantsLlamas can carry in excess of 133 lbs over 19 miles per day

[RUMINANT: An animal that chews the cud and has a complex digestive system with a four part stomach enabling bacteria to break down food. Ruminants lack upper incisor teeth and their complex stomach allows them to store and digest large amounts of bulky and fibrous food.]

North American Bison

This is my 5th page of an album I am making documenting all of our trips to the wild safari at Six Flags Great Adventure this summer.

The American Bison has a keen sense of smell, eyes that can detect movement up to a mile away and the ability to run as fast as a horse. A fully mature male can weigh 2100 lbs or more - a newborn calf weighs only 30 lbs. In the spring, the bison begin to shed their coats and rub their bodies against any object they can find.
=Largest animal in America=Commonly known as Buffalo
=Can smell water and enemies as far as three miles away
=Social animals that live in groups of up to 200

Oh my. Due to 95 degree weather, the kids rushed off to a mist dispenser to cool down. Imagine my surprise when this Adonis cut in to cool himself off. I immediately thought of all of you and had to take the picture. I did it for you, got it.
He was hot too, in more ways than one. :)
Kaylie cooling off.
Daddy and the kids by the water fountain on Main Street.

I've lost count of the times that I have taken the kids to Six Flags Great Adventure this year. All I know is that it is fun for them and that is all that matters.

This time, however, I cajouled my husband to go with us. A couple of things about him might shed some light as to how it went for him. He is an impatient man, does not like to stand around waiting for anything and dislikes amusement parks. He went along because of the kids, and because I drove and because he knew I wouldn't let him live it down. :)
It was a hot and sunny day; 95 degrees in the shade. Kaylie had been dying to go on the Skull Mountain ride, so Daddy went with her. I was ready to go with Liam but they wouldn't allow me to take my purse with me. And if I left it on the cubby holes that they provide for storage, they couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't get stolen, so I unboarded and passed up on the ride. I didn't have a lot of money, but did have my camera and ids. I couldnt' chance it. Instead, I went with Liam to the Wiggles world to keep him entertained while we waited for Daddy and Kaylie to get done with the ride.
The highlight of the day is always the sea lion and dolphin show. We got there 10 minutes prior to show time. The arena is open and fully exposed to the sun. We wore shades and hats, but didn't have an umbrella to shield us from the sun. Dh was moaning and groaning that it was too hot and that he was all wet from perspiration. My way of thinking is that we are already there, we can't do anything about the sun or sweating, so why complain or make a big fuss over it. Shut up and put up is what I did, and told him to do the same. Anyway, I know that this was the first and last time that dh will be coming with us to Great Adventure. I wanted him to experience all the fun I had this summer taking the kids there on an almost weekly basis. We still have a few more trips planned to Great Adventure, but the weather should be a lot cooler. 1543

First Day of School

Yes, I know, I don't know where all these pages are coming from. I guess my mojo was building up that week that DH was home and I couldn't scrap :)

Kaylie's and Liam's first day of school. Kaylie looked so cute wearing her long navy blue skirt and white tailored shirt with the scalloped peter pan collar, white hose and black Mary Janes. Liam wore a light blue button down shirt with navy blue pants. He wore his black oxford shoes. He wanted to wear a tie, but we didn't have one. I drove them to school and walked them to their classes to have their pictures taken with their teachers. I loved the picture of them walking hand in hand to their class. Sept. 4, 2008

African Elephant / Rough to the Touch

This is my 4th page of an album I am making documenting all of our trips to the wild safari at Six Flags Great Adventure this summer.
Standing as high as 11.5 feet tall and weighing up to 14,000 pounds, African elephants are the largest of all land mammals. They have smaller heads than Indian elephants and large, fan-shaped ears to facilitate cooling of body heat. Their long trunk is used as a hand for activities such as eating, drinking and bathing.

Elephants often suck water up into their trunk and squirt it into the mouth to drink or toss backwards over their body. Their eyesight is poor, but they have an acute sense of smell and hearing.

Giraffe / Rough to the Touch

This is my 3rd page of an album I am making documenting all of our trips to the wild safari at Six Flags Great Adventure this summer.

The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an African even-toed ungulate mammal, the tallest of all land-living animal species, and the largest ruminant. Males can be 4.8 to 5.5 metres (16 to 18 feet) tall and weigh up to 1,700 kilograms (3,800 pounds). The record-sized bull, shot in Kenya in 1934, was 5.87 m (19.2 ft) tall and weighed approximately 2,000 kg (4,400 lb).[2] Females are generally slightly shorter, and weigh less than the males do.
The giraffe is related to deer and cattle, but is placed in a separate family, the Giraffidae, consisting only of the giraffe and its closest relative, the okapi. Its range extends from Chad to South Africa.

Giraffes can inhabit savannas, grasslands, or open woodlands. They prefer areas enriched with acacia growth. They drink large quantities of water and, as a result, they can spend long periods of time in dry, arid areas. When searching for more food they will venture into areas with denser foliage.

{A RUMINANT is a mammal of the order Artiodactyla that digests plant-based food by initially softening it within the animal's first stomach, known as the rumen, then regurgitating the semi-digested mass, now known as cud, and chewing it again. The process of again chewing the cud to further break down plant matter and stimulate digestion is called "ruminating".}

Aoudad (Barbary Sheep) / Rough to the Touch

Click on layout to enlarge...

The Aoudad is a Barbary sheep with bristly reddish to sandy brown outer coat and a lighter under color. Both males and females have a heavy fringe of hair on their throat and tail. Both sexes carry thick triangular-based horns with a pattern of fine rings and curve over their back in a half circle. The Aoudad is native to the rocky and arid mountains of northern Africa. Their diet consists of sparse grasses, lichens and bushes.

Life span approximately 20 years / Weight 66-319 pounds / The female Aoudad gives birth twice a year and their newborns can climb the rocky hills almost immediately after birth. The Aoudad has such great jumping power that they can clear a 6.6 foot obstacle with ease from a standing start.

Sketch action by Trish Jones.(Note: after I ran the action, I turned the picture black and white , which I then tweaked, to get the effect I wanted.)

Note1: I modified some of the alpha. I didn't want all the disks to be the same color (and didn't want to mess with the hue and saturation) so I cloned some of the characters out, then I extracted the correct character which I then inserted in the disks)

Liam's School Day #4

It has began. I got a call from Liam's teacher today. Apparently, Liam had to be told numerous time to sit his butt down on the floor. When he finally sat down, he started using his hands to pretend shoot. Not really sure where he gets this as he doesn't have any toy guns in the house. Then, he was standing on his chair to look over a classmates desk. After he was told 2 times to sit down, he was warned that one more event would mean a call to his mother...can you guess how good he paid attention?

Anyway, after I got off the phone with her, I called in Liam for a mother son chat. He didn't want to come to me. And when he finally sat next to me, he wouldn't look me in the eyes. He chose to cry instead of talking. Anyway, after I explained to him what he did wrong, I told him that I expected him to listen to his teacher and behave in school. Next occurrence would mean that I would take his Nintendo DS away for a week and no computer time. I hope this works. I am afraid that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Ecological Disaster: The Slow Death of Woolman's Lake

This morning we woke up to front page news of the fish turning up dead at Woolman's Lake. Those of you who read my blog will know that I frequent this lake often. There isn't much to do at this lake, but I go to view the birds and the flowers that grow along its bank. It has been on a steady decline for years now. Nobody seems to want to do anything.

This event happened as a result of active measures taken by the State in response to Hannah. There were predictions that we were going to get at least 7 inches of rain which meant that the lake and the surrounding areas would overflow. The State of N.J. let the water levels drop in expectation of the aforementioned rains...it didn't materialize; I believe we got let than 2 inches of rain. By the time the State realized that the levels were too low, it was too late. Now, they are claiming that perhaps someone tampered with the levy.

The fishes are just floating on the lake, rotting away. There are tons of vultures sweeping in to eat them. On one tree alone I counted over 18 vultures. The air is stale and rotten. The homeowner's along the lake are complaining that it reeks of rotting fish. So, the municipality sent in 2 employees to go in the lake to collect the dead fish. 1454
